Maseru – Prime Minister Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane has committed to making the Leadership Forum and National Accountability Summit an annual platform for dialogue between the government and the public.

Speaking at the closing of the three-day summit at the 'Manthabiseng Convention Centre on Friday, the Prime Minister thanked Basotho across the country for actively participating in the discussions, both in person and online.

He said the success of the forum was made possible by the public's willingness to share their views, raise concerns and ask questions, including those directed to him.

Mr. Matekane said the dialogue has demonstrated the importance of involving citizens in decision-making, adding that the initiative was made possible through collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Rwanda.

He said some of the key issues raised during the summit included the commercialisation of agriculture to create employment and increase exports to international markets.

The Prime Minister also said participants called for greater skills transfer to Basotho whenever international companies undertake construction projects in the country.

Addressing young people, he announced that two youth representatives will be included in the Sebabatso committees to ensure that the views of young people are considered in national development.

He further directed the Ministry responsible for Gender, Youth and Social Development to address issues relating to the National Youth Response Plan and youth inclusion within the next three months.

Mr. Matekane said other concerns raised by the public included the removal of waste at Ha Ts'osane and delays in the issuance of passports.

He said the government has learnt the importance of planning together with citizens and announced that ministries will now produce quarterly progress reports to monitor the implementation of commitments made during the summit.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara thanked Basotho for their participation, saying the forum had shown that citizens value transparency and accountability.

She said a report on the outcomes of the summit will be published and that next year's summit will provide feedback on the progress made in implementing recommendations and addressing concerns raised by the public.

Justice Majara said the forum has strengthened the relationship between the government and citizens and called on all stakeholders to work together towards building the Lesotho that Basotho aspire to have.

During the closing session, the Judiciary and Parliament reaffirmed their commitment to continue engaging with the public beyond the summit and to implement the resolutions discussed.

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs. Matlhohonolofatso Ts'ita-Mosena, acknowledged public concerns over the performance of Members of Parliament, saying legislators have a responsibility to serve the nation diligently and effectively.

The Leadership Forum and National Accountability Summit, which began on Wednesday, brought together government leaders, Parliament, the Judiciary, development partners and members of the public to discuss governance, accountability and national development.
