MOHALE'S HOEK __ The ministry of Finance and Development Planning in partnership with United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is doing rounds across the country to engage the general public's opinions, views and input in the national budget of 2026/2027 fiscal year.

Mts Maleshoane Lekomola Danzeka, indicated that the Government of Lesotho has engaged its stakeholder UNICEF to partake in this task of consulting with the public.

Mrs Danzeka said it is important for the public to be included at all times when drawing up and designing the budget. The latter further pointed out that in doing so, the public's opinions, views and remarks are respected and not taken for granted and they will help in shaping up an inclusive budget that represents all sectors of the public including civil society organisations. The Budget Controller said engaging and consulting with the public is the first necessary step to be taken in any country all over the world.

Mrs Makhala Molejane, Chief Budget Officer, noted that the national budget must reflect the public's expectations in most areas or divisions of the budget. Mrs Molejane further elaborated that the ministry uses Top-Down Bottom-Up approach, hence engaging and consulting with the public representatives such as councilors, chiefs, business community, civil society organisations and all other relevant stakeholders. The latter also highlighted that all the views and opinions will be presented to the ministry for ministerial and technical discussion and review. Mrs 'Mabaruti Motsamai, UNICEF Social Policy Officer, stressed that the government and UNICEF are working hand in hand to boost and protect the country's economy according to the Public Expenditure and Accountability Act.

Mohale's Hoek District Administrator, Ms Moleboheng Lebele, said the talks with the government promotes good governance, public participation and inclusiveness in national matters.

Representatives of the public from various sectors included councilors, chiefs, youth clubs, religious sector, business sector, street vendors and many others.
