In his keynote address, the Prime Minister Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane said a number of countries across the globe have experienced disasters mostly due to climate change which he said requires countries to come up with sustainable measures which can help to address such challenges.

Mr. Matekane however urged for the usage of involving technologies as well as innovations to help with more advanced ways of disaster management.

On the other hand, Mr. Elliot Vhurumuku while conveying remarks on behalf of the World Food Programme (WFP) said that this dialogue should be used as a platform to outline lessons to strengthen the commitment of different stakeholders on the policies, response preparedness as well as finding out what can be done for sustainable disaster risk reduction.

He however advocates for partnerships from.different stakeholders towards attaining an economically viable Lesotho where different vulnerable groups can also be able to be protected against disasters.

Additionally, Mr. Mario Giuseppe Varrenti from the European Union said with the frequency of disasters across the globe which has also led to Lesotho's food insecurity, they will offer support to the country on programmes that offer education in different sectors.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of DMA Mr. Reatile Ellias said the purpose of this dialogue is to enable discussions from different stakeholders such as government ministers, development partners as well as the private sector on the sustainable measures which can be used, taken and implemented for disaster management that will be of benefit to the nation.

He stated that this event will uncover policies and programmes which the government of Lesotho through the help of development partners has implemented to address some of the hazards that affected the nation in different areas across the country.

He mentioned that it will also serve as a platform of discussion and reflection with the sole purpose of finding mitigation plans on disaster management which is a role for everyone.

The majority of Lesotho’s population relies on subsistence farming. Climate change has led to shorter growing seasons, erratic weather, and poor crop yields, threatening food security.
