DISTRICT NUTRITION TEAM HOLDS NUTRITION ASSESSMENT

At least twenty seven children were assessed during a four day Positive Deviance activity held at Thabana-Morena Ha Mabatla from Monday to Thursday last week.

The activity which was conducted by the District Nutrition Team and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition who  brought together breastfeeding mothers and guardians taking care of  zero to 59 months infants  from villages of Ha Mphaololi, Ha Ramats'eliso, Ha Seabki, Mabatla and Thabana-Ntsonyana who are getting health services from Mount Olivet Health Center.

In an interview with the District Food and Nutrition Coordinating Officer Mrs.'Mathabang Kalake  said the activity was conducted following high numbers of under five children who seemed not to be well fed indicating that every child should be healthy.

She highlighted that out of thirteen boys two of them were underweight, six were found at risk of being underweight and five were normal, saying out of fourteen girls five of them were underweight, seven at risk of being underweight and only two were normal.

The District Food and Nutrition Coordinating Officer said they encouraged breastfeeding mothers and guardians to establish Nutrition Club in the area as part of effort to support each other in healthy feeding of under five children as well as sharing experiences encountered in upbringing of under five children.

She stated that they also advised them to also engage in crop production and tree planting in promotion of food diversification and ensure creation of income generating activities.

Positive deviance (PD), is a behavioral and social change approach which involves learning from those who find unique and successful solutions to problems despite facing the same challenges, constraints and resource deprivation as others.
