Food and Nutrition Coordinating Office (FNCO) in the Prime Minister's office has disseminated all food and nutrition documents such as Lesotho Food and Nutrition Policy, Lesotho fortification regulations, Advocacy and social behavioural change strategy, Cost of hunger study and zero hunger, etc to stakeholders.
Mrs. Mathapelo Sethunya, FNCO Regional Coordinator South said the objective being to inform and share the documents made at central level for their implementation at district level. "We want to create a clear understanding for easy facilitation and coordination of activities,& she said. When giving the national nutrition situation, Mrs. Mpho Lifalakane FNCO Nutritionist said only a multi-sectoral approach can solve the problems of nutrition.
We should strengthen the implementation of multi-sectoral, nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive interventions at household, community, district and national levels, she said. She said immediate causes of undernutrition are inadequate dietary intake caused by household food insecurity, inadequate care and feeding practises and poor water and sanitation and inadequate health services.
chronic and acute malnutrition have decreased since 2004, however stunting remains high, and there has been little change to overweight.All districts are said to have high rates of chronic malnutrition, especially the three districts in the northeast, located in the mountains.
