The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Mr. Letsema Adonts’i expressed the government's commitment in managing waste through plastic levy regulations.
He said this during a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly on Thursday, where he was asked in line with question 715 to shed light to the House on administration of plastic levy.
Talking to the administrative part of the question, he alluded that the Ministry together with Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), for implementation of a new plastic levy.
He added RSL is to collect the revenue of which it will later be injected into the environment fund for the purposes of curbing climate change and its effect, pollution as well as managing waste crisis currently facing the country.
Minister Adonts’i stated that the said collection will further be used to intensify efforts meant to inform and educate the society through media and public gathering on the need to eliminate plastic use and resort to reusable bags.
Furthermore, he said while education on pollution is currently being done, the collection will further strengthen training for law enforcement agencies.
In another story, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs and Police, Mr. Lebona Lephema said sitting allowances for members of the Qhoasing F06 AND Lithipeng F04 local councils have been paid, saying the Ministry is yet to attend to the lunch allowances.
He was responding to question 716, where he was asked if he is aware that Members of the Qhoasing F06 AND Lithipeng F04 local councils in Phamong Constituency have not received their sitting allowances since April, 2024 and how soon such will be paid.
Other questions related to issues of electricity as well as factory workers' well-being to mention but a few. Today’s deliberations were conducted before the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Tlohang Sekhamane.
