HAWKERS IGNORE ASCENSION, CHOOSE WORK INSTEAD
Hawkers ignore ascension, choose work instead
10 May 2024 | 08:50

Just a few hours after the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office officially informed the nation that food insecurity continues to haunt the country, the 2024 Ascension Day has seen hawkers and other retail stores choosing work over communal worship, while some Christians in the city and in the villages were seen dressed in their different Churches regalia’s, attending Ascension Day services.

To them, the current increase of food prices, coupled with loss of jobs as also mentioned in Minister Limpho Tau’s statement leaves them with no choice but to explore all measures possible in order to put bread on the table.

One of the hawkers, ‘Maseema Mataboee, indicated that her personal relationship with Jesus Christ who otherwise is believed to have ascended to Heaven on this day will go a long way in saving her though she is at work instead of being at Church, attributing her choice to hunger and poverty facing her family.

With the 2023, global hunger index for Lesotho having recorded 35, 5 percent, another vendor, Mr. Montshi Mabesa who sells fruits at Masowe, he said he lost his wife due to diabetes a few years ago, noting he is the bread winner and a father of three, hence his decision to choose work rather than Ascension.

In another story, Kamohelo Rakhetla aged 17 said he attended the mass this morning at Catholic Church based at Likotsi where he is pleased to have participated in today’s service whose highlight was an indication Jesus mission in the world was complete and that it is upon the children of God to share peace with each other.
