INFORMATION OFFICER RAISES ALARM OVER RISE IN SEXUAL OFFENCES

Maseru, May 6 — The Magistrate’s Court Information Officer, Mr. Ibrahim Mohapeloa, has raised concern over the increasing number of sexual offence cases recorded at the Maseru Magistrate’s Court in April 2026.

In an interview on Tuesday, Mr. Mohapeloa described sexual offences as among the most serious crimes, citing their far-reaching impact on society. He warned that such offences contribute to the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and carry severe penalties of up to 15 years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine.

He urged members of the public to refrain from engaging in such crimes, particularly those involving children.

Mr. Mohapeloa further highlighted delays in the finalisation of cases, revealing that only 12 cases were completed during the month. He attributed the delays to incomplete police investigations as well as challenges faced by some accused persons in securing legal representation.

He also noted that disruptions arise when prosecutors pass away or when magistrates recuse themselves from cases, resulting in proceedings having to start afresh.

According to Mr. Mohapeloa, a total of 93 cases were recorded in April, compared to 81 in March, indicating an increase in the court’s caseload.

He added that individuals aged between 30 and 40 constitute the majority of those involved in criminal activities.

The Magistrate’s Court is a lower court responsible for handling a wide range of criminal and civil matters, including minor to moderately serious offences. It serves as the first point of contact for many individuals entering the justice system and plays a vital role in ensuring access to justice at the community level.
