LEKOKOANENG POTATOES FARMERS PREDICT LOW PRODUCTION

Despite farmers effort to contribute towards food security, some of Lekokoaneng potatoes farmers and producers say they foresee low production. According to one of the youths potatoes producers from Lekokoaneng, Mr. Mojalefa Mokotso, potatoes production is likely to be affected after experiencing heavy rains during the summer cropping.

Mr. Mokotso said although they invested heavily on farming during the summer season, their hopes of increased production faded away during the harvest of the first batch which were planted in September last year adding that there was low yield. He said potatoes are fragile to heavy rains and moisture and as a result most of them are badly affected and they have experienced the disease of potatoes blind, therefore they do not generate good income at the market.Mr. Mokotso attributed that as for the second batch which were planted one acre in January, he will soon start the harvesting process. He pointed out that when agricultural season was good with less challenges, potatoes have a good market.

Mr. Mokotso further encouraged other youths to invest their time in agriculture because there are no jobs, adding that it has a good return which can help people to become self-reliant. He started potatoes production in 2016 and he is an affiliate member of Berea Business Forum. Potatoes are the seasonal crops in Lesotho and they are said to be a good source of fibre which help people to lose weight and they also prevent heart disease by keeping cholesterol and blood sugar levels intact.
