LESOTHO IMPOSES RESTRICTIONS ON IMPORTATION OF EGGS

Maseru __ Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has announced that it has restricted the importation of eggs with effect from January, 01st.

Speaking in an interview with the Agency on Saturday, the minister of Agriculture and Food Security Mr. Thabo Mofosi said that this decision was taken following the availability and adequate supply of eggs produced by local agricultural enterprises.

He indicated that this move is however done in an endeavour to facilitate market access for locally produced eggs as supported by the Agricultural Marketing Regulations of 1969.

Mr. Mofosi however stated that there will be measures put in place to ensure that all the districts are fully supplied with enough eggs.

The Agency has learnt of the complaints that some Basotho were having about this decision saying that the country does not hold enough capacity to supply eggs.

Lesotho enforces regulations on the importation of eggs to protect local agriculture and ensure food safety. According to the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1967, importing eggs into Lesotho requires a permit issued by the Marketing Officer.

This measure helps regulate the quantity and quality of eggs entering the country.
