LMPS CONCERNED ON SALE OF ALCOHOL TO UNDERAGES
LMPS CONCERNED ON SALE OF ALCOHOL TO UNDERAGES
31 December 2024 | 15:36

The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) management has shown great concern on the sale and supply of alcoholic beverages to under age children. This, the LMPS said through its Public Relations Office which it said it is contrary to the dictates of the Liquor Licencing Act No. 8 particularly section 39 which explicitly prohibits the supplying of liquor to children under the age of 18 including purchasing the same for them.

The LMPS showed that it is also an offence in terms of the same Act for anyone to send a child to purchase liquor or to purchase liquor for a child. It also mentioned that these actions create a situation where children roam around the streets and villages heavily drunk which poses a serious threat to their lives, other citizens as well as road users. The LMPS also informed Liquor Licensees that they are mandated by the law to ensure that liquor is sold at the time permitted by law only or at a place where it is lawful to do so or to sell to a person not prohibited by the law to buy alcohol.

It also reminded that it is also an offence punishable by law for anyone to be violent and disorderly at the licensed place or fails to leave the licences premises when requested by the license his servant or agent or any member of the police. The LMPS management has also reported that there is a concern of numerous cases concerning people who go to liquor selling places armed with fireworks.
