06 July 2018 | 13:14

The Government of Lesotho (GOL) through the Ministry of Development Planning in Collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), will commemorate World Population Day on the 11th July 2018 at Ha–Nkaku in the Mohaleshoek district.

According to family planning statistics, Mohale’s-Hoek ranked the second last with low Uptake of family planning services at 53 % and high Unmet need of 22%.

Therefore the theme for this year is “FAMILY PLANNING IS A HUMAN RIGHT” which is based on the most pressing problems experienced globally.

However the purpose of the commemoration is to raise awareness amongst families, communities, policy makers, public servants, NGOS and the nation at large, that family planning is a human right that is key to ensuring the well being of families, especially to enable women and young girls to access voluntary quality contraception services.

Moreover the Ministries of Health, Gender, Youth, Sports and Recreation, Education and Training as well as Lesotho Planned Parenthood Association (LPPA), will also participate during the commemoration as key stakeholders in population related issues.

World population day is commemorated annually by all member countries of the United Nations, to mark the significance of population trends and related issues.
