During the on-going 45th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Antananarivo, Madagascar, the President of the Republic of Madagascar Mr. Andry Rajoelina, was elected as Chairperson of SADC.
The summit is under the theme 'Advancing Industrialisation, Agricultural Transformation, and Energy Transition for a Resilient SADC' and President Rajoelina took over the leadership of the regional bloc from Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, who has steered the Organisation over the past year.
In his acceptance, President Rajoelina underscored the importance of solidarity and shared responsibility in driving the SADC integration agenda, particularly in strengthening economic resilience, promoting regional stability, and accelerating sustainable development for the benefit of the citizens of Southern Africa.
Moreover, Lesotho was removed from the SADC (Southern African Development Community) Organ Troika's agenda regarding the political and security situation in the country.
This decision followed a meeting where Lesotho's Prime Minister updated the summit on the stable political and security situation following the 2022 general elections. The summit recognized progress in the reform’s agenda, which is expected to lead to lasting peace and stability.
