21 November 2024 | 07:51

The Mokhotlong District Manager Mr. Khau Maseru has requested Lets'eng Diamond Mine to assist the district with construction of a structure that could be used as a proper dumping site.

Mr. Maseru made the request at the annual district stakeholders forum organised by Lets'eng Diamond Mine in Mokhotlong town on Wednesday.

The purpose of the forum was to create a platform for the Mine and stakeholders from different walks of life to meet and discuss important issues of mutual concern for the development of the district.

He said availability of proper structure is needed to   keep Mokhotlong clean as waste materials such as plastic bags will be classified and managed for promotion of a healthy environment.

Currently Mokhotlong uses a place called Lentsoete on the way to Ha Mojakisane as a dumping site and there is a rising concern of plastic bags that fly all over the fields in that area.

Chief Mojakisane Ts'ita of Ha Mojakisane supported the request and said the plastics are dangerous to animal grazing as well hence the need for a proper dumping area.

Other stakeholders asked for construction of a bus rank, stalls for street vendors, an abattoir and a football ground to mention among others.

In his response pertaining to the requests, the Mine's Corporate Social Responsibility Investment and Communications Specialist Mr. Ts'epo Hlojeng advised stakeholders to submit proposals and see how the mine under its social responsibility and investment component can assist.

He however highlighted that currently the mine is still working on the completion of the other projects that include Liphamola Dairy Farm and Egg Circles as some of the huge projects funded by Lets'eng Diamonds mine.

Mr. Hlojeng explained that every year, M5 million is earmarked for development projects under the corporate social responsibility and investment policy. Lets'eng Diamonds operates the Letseng Diamond Mine, which is located at Lets'eng-la'Terae in Mokhotlong.

The mine is renowned for its large top-quality diamonds which include the 910-carat Lesotho Legend, the 603 Lesotho Promise, the 601-carat Lesotho Brown, 550-carat Lets'eng Star, the 493-carat Lets'eng Legacy and the 478-carat Leseli la Lets'eng.
