The former Prime Minister of Lesotho Dr.Pakalitha Mosisili has in his message of condolences at the funeral service of former President of Botswana President Festus Mogae reflected on Botswana’s role in supporting constitutional order in Lesotho during the 1998 post-election unrest, describing it as a contribution aimed at safeguarding the democratic will of the Basotho people.
In his remarks Dr. Mosisili recalled Botswana’s contribution to peace and stability in Lesotho during the 1998 post-election unrest, saying Botswana Defence Force soldiers, working alongside South African forces, helped safeguard democracy and the will of the Basotho people.
Dr. Mosisili said the people of Lesotho owe Botswana and former President Mogae a debt of gratitude for their support during that difficult period. He said that Mr. Mogae’s legacy would continue to inspire African leaders to place service to humanity above the pursuit of power.
The historic diplomatic relations between Lesotho and Botswana have been reaffirmed as the region continues to honour the legacy of former Botswana President Festus Mogae, widely remembered for his commitment to democracy, good governance, and regional cooperation.
Born in 1939 in Serowe, Botswana, Mr. Mogae rose from an accomplished economist and public servant to become President in 1998. His leadership is credited with strengthening Botswana’s economic stability and introducing one of Africa’s most effective national responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, including the early rollout of antiretroviral treatment programmes.
Beyond national achievements, Mr. Mogae played a significant role in advancing regional integration within the Southern African Development Community, where he consistently promoted cooperation, stability, and African-led solutions to development challenges.
Relations between Lesotho and Botswana have long been characterised by mutual respect and collaboration, anchored in shared membership of SADC and a common commitment to peace, democracy and constitutional governance.
