The National Association of the Deaf Lesotho (NADL) will join the rest of the world, by commemorating the International Deaf Week on the 13th September 2018, at ‘Manthabiseng convention centre in Maseru.
NADL says the International Deaf Week is celebrated annually on the 23rd September, by organisations of deaf people promoting equal rights for the deaf people in the world.
On its report NADL says it is an organisation promoting equal rights of people living with hearing disability, through the use of sign language in Lesotho.
The deputy chairperson of NADL Mrs ‘Mat’sepiso Mokhorometsi, said the objectives of the International Deaf Week include reaching out to influence government of Lesotho to legally fulfill their obligations, and to reflect the principles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), in its recognition of sign languages as equal to spoken languages.
She further said through the International Deaf Week, NADL emphasizes sign language as a critical prerequisite to the full realization of human rights for deaf people, and that sign languages are fully-fledged natural languages, structurally distinct from spoken languages, alongside which they coexist.
The event is sponsored by Vodacom Lesotho, Ministry of Labour and Employmnt and Lesotho Mounted Police Services(LMPS).
