Seven days have passed since the Roma community petitioned the National University of Lesotho (NUL) Management pertaining to vandalism of the community's property by the university students.
Prior to handing over the petition, the Roma community held a peaceful solidarity march from Mahlanyeng to the university’s main gate where the NUL Registrar received the petition on behalf of the university.
Roma Community Committee Dr. ‘Mantsejoa Thakaso confirmed that they have not received any response from the NUL Management. She said though they had not given any time frame for the university to respond, they were hoping that by now the NUL Management would have responded to their letter.
She said before petitioning the Management they had for several occasions together with the community leaders and police tried to engage the university in deliberations on how they can resolve damage caused by students whenever they are on strike.
Amongst issues they raised in their petition, the community had said this vandalism of property could lead to investors leaving the area as a result affecting development of Roma. They said NUL Management together with students should be able to solve their problems amicably and within their parameters. They added that they will hold NUL Management and students accountable for any vandalism in the future.
Meanwhile the NUL students through Public Administration and Political Studies Association (PAPSA) have written to the Roma Area Chief proposing to meet with the community to apologize for behaviour of all NUL students and work towards forging better relations.
