Maseru, June 11 – Parents in Teyateyaneng have raised concerns over the increasing abuse of drugs among children as young as 11 years old, saying the trend poses a serious threat to the well-being and future of young people in the area.
Speaking on behalf of parents during a meeting with the District Child Protection Team (DCPT), Mrs. ’Malefa Rampo said substance abuse among children has become a major challenge that requires urgent attention from all stakeholders.
She said parents are deeply worried about the growing number of children engaging in drug use, adding that the problem could have long-term consequences for both the affected children and the wider community.
Mrs. Rampo noted that parents brought the matter before the DCPT in the hope of finding effective interventions that would protect children from risky behaviours and prevent them from becoming involved in harmful activities.
According to her, children are abusing substances such as vapes, cigarettes, cannabis and crystal meth. She said children who use drugs often become stubborn, untidy and dishonest, making it difficult for parents and guardians to guide and support them.
She indicated that the problem is particularly common among boys from the age of 11, including some who are still attending primary school. Many continue using drugs as they progress to high school. Although girls are also affected, boys account for the majority of reported cases.
Mrs. Rampo further stated that some children frequently leave home without informing their parents of their whereabouts. She added that children have identified specific places within communities and around schools where they gather to smoke and use drugs.
During the meeting, members of the DCPT agreed on several interventions aimed at addressing the problem. These include radio programmes to raise awareness about drug abuse, discussions with parents on positive parenting, sharing success stories from former drug users and commemorating Youth Day with activities focusing on drug abuse and other issues affecting young people.
The DCPT also committed to exploring and implementing additional measures to curb drug abuse among children and safeguard their well-being.
