The Deputy Principal Secretary (DPS) at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning Mrs. Teboho Malisebo ;Mokela has urged Farmers to engage into organic farming, this he said during the Evaluation of the National Strategic Development Plan II (NSDP II). Mrs Mokela stated that the organic farming is getting more popular as a farm practice, although most agricultural land is still processed through conventional farming, the demand for organic agriculture and organic crops is constantly increasing.

Mokela indicated that organic farming aims to create a socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable food production system. In addition, she said more precisely, organic farming is based on managing the agroecosystem rather than relying on external farming inputs, such as pesticides, artificial fertilizers, additives, and genetically modified organisms.  She also mentioned that organic farming involves the use of traditional farm practices in combination with advanced scientific research and modern farm innovations.

DPS pointed out that the debate is still on amongst farmers as to how they go about the organic farming as compared to the conventional way however, she said it has been proved that both still serve the purpose of farming though the organic way is more profitable, and healthier than the other.  Besides that, she mentioned that Organic farming is better for the environment than conventional because it benefits the overall ecosystem by minimizing the usage of chemicals and improving overall soil properties. In addition, she mentioned that Organic practices improve overall soil conditions and prevent soil erosion. Organic farmers enrich the soil with organic matter which significantly improves soil fertility.
