Quthing __ More than ninety (90) Elderly persons from various areas throughout Quthing district will gather at Upper Moyeni to celebrate International Day of Elderly Persons on Saturday this week.
The event on the theme ‘The part we play: Celebrating the integral role of older persons in our communities ' has been organized by district department of Gender, Youth and Social Development in partnership with Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS) Quthing Division is Vian effort to appreciate elderly people in the district.
In an interview with the Agency, the Department of Social Development Manager in Quthing Mrs. Masealimo Tjotjela said the event is intended to show appreciation of elderly persons in the district since they are wealthy of knowledge and experience in the society.
She stated that elderly people have special skills and experience in the history of Lesotho and Basotho, adding that their presence is valued mostly this time when Basotho are celebrating 200 years of their country 's independence, they have to be informed about where they are from, to understand the direction they should follow from this year.
She further said activities for the event will include; speeches on encouraging the elderly to join and establish clubs in their areas, share ideas and experiences for their protection against different types of abuse and maintenance of healthy life.
Aged people expected at the event will be members of elderly persons clubs from different villages in Mjanyane, Qomoqomong, Tosingans Telle Community Councils and Quthing Urban Council.
International Day of the Elderly celebrated annually to raise awareness on the importance contribution of elderly people in the society, changes they face, and encourage action to address the challenges
