Berea __ As part of the government’s effort to promote urban infrastructure development, construction of Teyateyaneng Bus Terminal is making significant progress.
The construction process of Teyateyaneng Bus Terminal is undertaken by the Chinese Company namely, Chuye Construction and it is happening at the place which used to be Lioli F.C ground.
Speaking to LENA regarding the progress made, Urban Council Town Clerk Ms. Nkhabo Thamae said the project which is allocated a one year duration, resumed earlier this year in February with some preparatory work or relocating street vendors and a large portion of Lioli F.C ground.
Ms. Thamae highlighted that currently the contractor has moved to the stage of advanced infrastructure by marking and digging furrows in preparations to lay down the foundation for the building structure.
She said the plan is to construct an advanced bus terminal which will have a provision of proper shelter for passenger vehicles, stalls for street vendors, water and sanitation.
Town Clerk said upon completion, the bus terminal is scheduled to accommodate all forms of passenger transport ranging from buses, taxies and even the cabs.
She further said the expectations are high that upon its completion, the bus terminal will play a significant role to improve the district economy and to eliminate the establishment of illegal ranks.
One of the road users, Mr. Thabo Morakabi said access to public toilets is a major struggle and their expectations are high that the bus terminal will have proper lighting, reliable water and sanitation for cleanliness and public health.
He said with the ongoing infrastructure development, they are looking to see a new look of Teyateyaneng town.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane earlier this year during the 2024/2025 fiscal year budget speech presentation which was themed, “Building Resilience, Fostering Growth”, said creating an enabling infrastructure is crucial for fostering innovation, improving quality of life, enhancing productivity, and promoting sustainable development.
Dr. Matlanayane highlighted that the government is investing in infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of Basotho by allocating M4 billion.
On other hand, the government of Lesotho through its development strategies has decided to continue with the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP-II) 20218/19 to 2022/2023 as extended in pursuit of the economic and institute transformation for private sector led jobs and inclusive growth.
Building enabling infrastructure is among the key priority areas in NSDP II which highlights that effective infrastructure remains the backbone of the economy, as it will enable trade, empower businesses and industries, connect workers to their jobs, and connect communities to opportunities for employment, health care, and education.
