Teyateyaneng urban roads undergo rehabilitation
05 November 2024 | 16:51

In a bid to promote smooth traffic flow, several roads within Teyateyaneng town are set to undergo rehabilitation.

Teyateyaneng Urban Council Town Clerk Ms. Nkhabo Thamae confirmed this during an interview with LENA on Monday.  Thamae said the upgrading of Teyateyaneng urban roads will be conducted by China Geo Construction for a period of two years.

She pointed out that the contractor has started to mobilize its equipment to the project site ahead of the major works. She said the town is one of the busy areas which usually experience traffic jams not only on the busy days or during rush hours and as a result the upgrading of the urban road is to minimize the traffic congestion.

She further said upon the completion of the urban roads, the expectation is to see an improved connectivity, adding that road users will have more options to manoeuvre the traffic in order to get home quicker.

When approached for a comment, one of the community members Mr. Stephen Pheko said upgrading of the urban roads is a major boost to the local economy as people are likely to get jobs to support their families.

Pheko said Teyateyaneng was not seen like a transit zone to other districts with only one major street passing through it and as a result traffic jams were a major hindrance causing delays for road users, but the upgrading of the roads will be a solution to such a challenge.

Also interviewed one of the road users Mrs. Mathang Mokhethi said the roads will open routes for cabs and taxi operators. Mokhethi stressed that the new roads will also improve access to essential services like hospitals and schools.

Meanwhile, construction of Teyateyaneng bus terminal is among the major construction works taking place in Berea district.

During the 2024/2025 fiscal year budget presentation which was themed, “Building resilience, fostering growth”, the government of Lesotho through the Minister of Finance and Development Planning Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane allocated the M4.0 billion for infrastructure development to meet the evolving needs of Basotho nation.
