Maseru __ The United Nations (UN) agencies high-level delegation paid a courtesy call on the Head of State, King Letsie III as well as on Prime Minister, Mr. Ntsokoane Matekane on Sunday.

They are World Food Programme (WFP), Assistance Executive Director Valerie Guarnieri and IFAD Associate Vice President Donal Brown. It is also expected that Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) Director-General QU Dongyu is in the country.

Upon arrival at the State House, the Agency interviewed the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr. Lejone Mpotjoane who affirmed that the UN entourage is in Lesotho on the invitation of King, who serves as FAO Special Goodwill Ambassador.

“They will be joining the King for a bicentenary celebration as well as partaking in the food month activities starting tomorrow, Monday to Wednesday.” He added.

The Minister pointed out that as part of promoting agriculture in line with National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP) II review extension, local farmers with support of these agencies are engaged in projects. He talked about the Smallholder Agriculture Development Project (SADP), aiming to enhance food systems through increased commercialisation as well as building resilience of smallscale agriculture.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the delegation, WFP Assistance Executive Director mentioned that she and the team are delighted to be in the country, adding they support the country on school feeding programmes amongst others.

“Food is life; hence more emphasis must be on proper nutrition as a driver for prosperity.  Us being in Lesotho demonstrates support to efforts geared in tackling drought, building resilience and promoting agriculture. We are also here for the 200 years celebratio.” Guarnieri echoed.

The Agency has learnt, the delegation will join the King during a field trip in Mahobong today, while this week a number of activities that include market exhibition at Masianokeng including high level dialogue on food systems will also be held as part of food month.
