The office of the Maseru District Administrator, Lesotho Mounted Police Service, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Social Development, removed the five mentally disabled people from the streets of Maseru yesterday, and took them to Mohlomi Hospital for medical treatment.

During the event, the Maseru District Administrator Mr Mpane Nthunya, said a home for the mentally disabled people who are also vulnerable needs to be built.

He said he hopes that Mohlomi Hospital will help to provide medical treatment, to those patients until they are healed.

In his statement Mr Nthunya expressed his concern, that in the streets of Maseru there are many people who are suffering from illnesses which are looked down upon, which include mental related illnesses.

He also said his office decided to meet with other stakeholders, to discuss how they can remove people with mental illnesses from the streets, and they agreed to do so yesterday.

In her remarks, the manager in the Department of Nursing at Mohlomi Hospital Sister ‘Mampolai Tsemane, said they have a limited space for admitting patients, as Mohlomi Hospital was initially built with the purpose of being a referral hospital.

She called on members of the public not to humiliate people with mental illnesses, as by doing so their mental status escalates.
