LNC expresses concern over illegal mushrooming clinics in Lesotho.

The Lesotho Nursing Council (LNC) says it is greatly concerned about the issue of illegal and mushrooming private clinics, which were never recommended to operate by LNC as a regulatory body.

A member of LNC Board Mrs ‘Matumelo Tlelima, said during its inspection LNC found allegedly forged authorizations, implicating the Ministry of Health and people with no nursing background performing on clients.

She said some of these facilities are owned by other cadres of health workers, where legally are not allowed to own such practices, as indicated in the Nurses and Midwives Act 12 of 1988.

She said according to this act it is only registered nurse midwives, who are allowed to open facilities but also after they have met all the criteria for LNC.

She further stated that in remedy of these occurrences, LNC has sued in the courts of law such practices, and some of such cases have already been processed, prosecuted and culprits sentenced accordingly by the courts of law.

Tlelima made the public aware that there are people who are not registered nurse midwives, who claim to have been authorized by the LNC to practice, as they try to win the trust for the public with false information.
