The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) clarified some of the false allegations emerging from members of the public in relation to its work in Maseru yesterday.

The LHDA Director Mrs Refiloe Tlali said in the Polihali Dam construction project, it is alleged that the project will focus only on supplying water to South Africa and no more on generating electricity for Lesotho.

She refuted the allegations saying the 1986 Treaty and the LHDA Phase II Agreement indicate that when LHDA starts this project, it will focus on supplying water to South Africa and to generate electricity for Lesotho.

Mrs Tali further said they are accused of not complying with the terms of their agreement, by starting the construction in Polihali when they had to start in Mashai.

On this issue she said Article 5 of the Treaty of 1986 stipulates that the LHDA projects will be implemented in areas stated in the agreement including Mashai, or any other place that has enough water to meet the project demand of 70 cubic meters.

She further said they received complaints from people who want compensation from LHDA, whom their land was taken when the project started.
