Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship announced it found irregularities in the administration of Maseru City Council (MCC) which falls under its control.

Speaking in Maseru yesterday, the Minister of Local Government and Chieftainship Honorable Lit’soane Lit’soane said MCC councilors awarded tenders against sections under Local Government Act of 1997, which does not allow local councilors to implement policies, but allows civil servants with their different expertise.

He said based on Section 92 of Local Government Act of 1997, he has decided to dissolve the MCC tender board.

In his statement he further pointed out that MCC formulated loans and salary advance policy, for councilors and MCC employees.

Lit’soane stated that currently M3 471 800.00 is advanced to the councilors, and that he regrets to announce that at the end of July 2019, MCC was not able to pay salaries of its employees and it paid them with some of the money reserved for maintenance of street lights of the city of Maseru.  

He said based on Section 12 of Local Government Service Act of 2008, he has decided to counsel this policy.

He further said MCC formulated Travel Allowance policy, which its sections are against laws regulating Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship.
