World Bank commemorated the International Day of Ending Learning Poverty, in all its branches around the world on Thursday October 2019.

The World Bank Maseru Branch joint all other international branches in this annual event through video conferencing, under the theme; “Ending Learning Poverty”.

The Public Relations Officer at the World Bank Maseru Branch Elita Banda, said the aim of the bank with this event is to encourage children at the age of ten all around the world, to be able to read and understand short stories.

She said statistics show that in Sub-Saharan Africa, 77% of ten years old children cannot read and understand short stories, and this is called Learning Poverty.

She further explained that the vision for the Human Capital Plan is that all girls and boys grow up well nourished and ready to learn in the classrooms, and enter the work market as healthy, skilled and productive adults.

Banda pointed out that education is critical to improving the Human Capital Index, as most of the Human Capital Index gaps relate to education outcomes.
