The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) officially launched the 2019 Human Development Report, in Maseru on Monday this week, titled “Beyond income, beyond averages, beyond today; Inequalities in human development in the 21st century”.

Speaking during the event the UNDP Resident Representative Mrs. Betty Wabunoha said, this report published annually since 1990, initiates and helps drive the sensitization on issues central to human development.

She said over the years, it has been proven that development is more than what GDP measures, but Human Development is about enlarging people’s freedoms, choices, and capabilities to live a long and healthy life, being educated, having a decent standard of living and enjoying political and civil freedoms, to participate in the life of one’s community.

When accepting the report the Minister of Development Planning Honorable Tlohelang Aumane, said the Government of Lesotho through the Ministry of Education and Training, has developed a Curriculum and Assessment Policy aimed at harnessing and developing the necessary skills that are better aligned to Lesotho’s economic strategy.

He said another exciting trend in the area of health has been the declining under-5 mortality rate over the recent years, and one of the major factors that could be attributed to this positive development is the improvement in immunization coverage and child nutrition.
