South Africa has reported over 364,000 COVID-19 cases as of yesterday, and officials from the World Health Organization (who) are concerned that the country’s rising numbers could signal greater Covid-19 spread throughout Africa.

There are now over 720,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus across Africa, with a number of African countries imposing a range of prevention and containment measures against the spread of the pandemic.

As of the 13th May 2020 every African country had recorded COVID-19 infection, the last being Lesotho.

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, South Africa has the fifth most confirmed Covid-19 infections in the world and WHO’s Health Emmergency Program Dr. Mike Ryan said the cases in South Africa have accelerated by 30% in the last week.

He said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus has been in touch with their collegues in South Africa and they are providing technical assistance in South Africa.
