Disaster Management Authority (DMA) Deputy Chief Executive, Mrs. 'Makhotso Mahosi has urged prevention of
disasters to avoid costly disasters. This, she highlighted in response to Citizen Voice and Action representatives at the Rountable discussion on the Humanitarian Advocacy and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management held in Maseru on Monday. Mrs. Mahosi explained that her office came up with a National Strategic Response Work Plan which was not effective and mostly costly.

In addition, she said they have decided to focus on the prevention side of disasters which if it fails they mitigate or respond immediately."Responding immediately has more positive effects and more cash has been allocated to it," she indicated. She urged the District Disaster Management Teams to keep their District Preparedness Plans up to date to help respond immediately.

Speaking at the same occasion, District Disaster Manager Leribe, Mr. Rets'elisitsoe Molefe pointed out that Disaster Management Act 1997 is not irrelevant as highlighted by World Vision Lesotho but rather it needs to be amended. He explained that for prevention of disasters they are working together with the Early Warning Systems II project, Lesotho Meteorology Services and ICOV in distributing early warning messages.
