AFRICA DAY NOT HAPPY DAY FOR NUL STUDENTS
26 May 2023 | 09:00

While many have joined the rest of Africa in celebrating Africa Day and enjoying the benefits of the fight for liberation, this day is not a happy one for the students at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) as they stay away from the campus to demonstrate dissatisfaction over their grievances which they say are not being addressed. Speaking in an interview with the President of NUL Student Representative Council (SRC), Mr. Tumo Tsanyane stated that until their grievances are addressed, the students will not come to the campus. He indicated that students have been seeking scholarships since November last year and have not yet secured them.

He said that despite an undertaking by the Government of Lesotho through the office of the Prime Minister and the cabinet that they will ensure that unsponsored students receive sponsorships. He pointed out that such students are now unable to sit for examinations. He stated that NUL will remain shut down until the government has given the unsponsored students the scholarships.

He added that the government should give assurance that all students will receive full allowances and rent for June. He further added that signing of student projects and attachments should be completed, and then the situation will go back to normal at the campus.
