The Lesotho Correctional Services (LCS) spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent Pheko Ntobane has shared the light into the matter of an inmate who is reported to have died in prison last week. Assistant Superintendent Ntobane indicated that the cause of death of the inmate is natural death unlike what is being speculated in a number of social media platforms.
He said that these are normal cases that can still be experienced in any prison showing that this is the first case that they have reported for this year.

While explaining on the matter of burial procedures, Assistant Superintendent Ntobane explained that in such cases the
family of the deceased are traced and are being given a chance to take over the responsibility of the burial but in cases where a family cannot be accessed or is unable to take over, the state takes full responsibility of the burial with the help of other stakeholders such as the Maseru City Council.

The purpose of LCS is to contribute to the maintenance and protection of a society that is just, peaceful and safe and It does this by carrying out the sentences of the courts, detaining all inmates in safe and secure custody whilst retaining their human dignity, promoting self-respect, social responsibility and human development of all inmates. It also focuses on ensuring reformation, rehabilitation and social reintegration of inmates into society.
