SAAPA ADVOCATES FOR ALCOHOL ADVERTISING BAN TO PROTECT CHILDREN
SAAPA ADVOCATES FOR ALCOHOL ADVERTISING BAN TO PROTECT CHILDREN
01 August 2023 | 11:34

The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA) Country Coordinator Mr. Mothobi Molefi says they are advocating for an alcohol advertising ban to protect youth and children. This he said during the campaign to commemorate Youth Day at an event held in Tholoana ea Lerato on Friday.  Mr. Molefi indicated that advertising alcohol attracts youth and children to experience the taste and that results in them being alcoholics.

He said advertisements deceive young children as people who are used to advertise are prominent and every child wants to imitate everything that they do.

Mr. Molefi indicated that they are working hard to make the government see the importance of making alcohol and drug abuse Act that will assist in the prosecution of people who abuse alcohol.

Tshedy Takalimane from Give them Hope and Future stated that Lesotho does not have laws and policies that address abuse of alcohol and drugs.  South Africa commemorates Youth Day every year on June 16. It began on June 16, 1976, with the Soweto uprising, a wave of protests and mass demonstrations spearheaded by schoolchildren in South Africa.
