Two days before the end of August women’s month, Information

Communication Technology (ICT) woman in the Ministry of Gender, Youth, Sports, Arts, Culture and Social Development has called women to celebrate beyond this month.

Speaking with the Agency, Ms. Lerato Mokoena outlined the need for women to engage in ICT as a tool for development that attracted the sustained attention of the United Nations in the modern days.

She reiterated that ICT is an interesting field in the 21 st  century that has a potential of promoting economic growth, hence women should also take opportunity and explore this

field as well. Meanwhile, the Agency has also established that the department of science in the Ministry of Information is engaged on an online survey meant to establish the total number of women and girls in science, ICT and engineering among others. This according to the department would enable them to keep record and trace of these

females so that they can be supported in all means possible. The ICT sector according to the 2000 United Nations report on women has shown that this sector consists of segments as diverse as telecommunications, television and radio broadcasting, computer hardware, software and services and electronic media. Though the report thus not state clear statistics but it has shown that there is gender divide, with women and girls enjoying less access to information technology than men and boys.
