In commemoration of the International Deaf awareness week, the National Association of the Deaf Lesotho (NADL) will hold a one day workshop in Maseru on Wednesday. Speaking in an interview, the association’s Director Ms. Bongiwe Buzi said the purpose of this workshop is to put in light all parties the challenges that the deaf community face in their everyday life.

She stated that being deaf brings challenges that not everyone will experience and part of these challenges can be to do with mental health and exclusion from others. She said lack of access to quality education for the deaf community is a challenge which the country is still faced with.

Ms. Buzi however applauded the government through the ministry of gender, sports, youth, arts, culture and social development for the establishment of the Persons with disability Advisory Council stating that it is a step into the right direction for inclusion of people with disabilities. The International Deaf awareness week is commemorated globally with the purposes of showing to the world how hearing loss impacts daily life and how others can help support deaf people.
