ust a week after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) threatened to sue political parties which have not yet submitted their financial statements, the Commission says there is a huge improvement.

IEC’S Chief Legal Officer (CLO) Advocate Lehlohonolo Suping told the Agency that the majority of the political parties registered with the Commission have already submitted their financial statements.

He said only two political parties have a zero percent compliance and are likely to receive the letters of demand before the end of this week. CLO Suping believed that the press conference in which Director of Elections Advocate

Mpaiphele Maqutu stated that only one political party was a shining example in terms of compliance, and could have influenced the political parties to comply.

He mentioned that some have already approached the Commission to show willingness to comply while others were in the IEC offices submitting their financial statements.

The Alliance of Democrats (AD) was touted as the only political party which had hundred percent compliance during the media briefing.

IEC has deregistered a total of 16 political parties for noncompliance with some of the Commission’s requirements.

The political parties must submit their financial statements six month after the elections in which they were allocated campaign funding by the Commission.

They also receive party funding for operational purposes and are also expected to disclose their donations worth over M200, 000 during the election period.

Meanwhile, IEC is now gearing up for the Local Government with only 51 political parties expected to contest for the 950 Electoral Divisions (EDs) which are due on September 29  countrywide.
