In a bid to recognize the importance of senior citizens in  the  modern society, the Department of Social Development in Berea will celebrate the International Day of Elderly on October 13 at an event to be staged at Teyateyaneng Youth Centre.This was disclosed by Department of Social Development District Manager Mrs. Matumelo Letlala during an interview with LENA on Tuesday.

Mrs. Letlala said the event is set to be celebrated under a theme, “Resilience of older persons in a changing world”, and it seeks to recognize the significant contributions made by elderly people in all aspects of life. She highlighted that as the world keeps on evolving with many changes, elderly people are not supposed to be left behind, furthermore the event is meant to create a platform of raising awareness of challenges faced by elderly people and how to promote collaborative support for such people.

The Department of Social Development District Manager said among the activities that will unfold on that special day includes elderly people;s fun walk from Teyateyaneng main circle to Youths Centre and presentation of parcels to at least 80 elderly people coming from different councils of Berea. International Day of Elderly persons is  celebrated on October 01 to honor the rights of elderly people and recognize their contribution in the world.
