The Lesotho’s senior women’s soccer squad popularly known as Mehalalitoe have lost two out of two COSAFA Women’s Championship by Botswana counterparts played in Johannesburg on Monday. The 3-0 loss is the second after Mehalalitoe lost the COSAFA Cup opening match 1-0 against Zimbabwe which returned to international football following suspension by FIFA.

Mehalalitoe’s last game will be against Namibia on Wednesday and it will be just a formality and pride at stake for the girls from the mountain kingdom since they have already been eliminated in this year’s edition of the tournament.When approached for comment, Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) Secretary General Mr. Mokhosi Mohapi described the loss as devastating, saying he was not expecting such a defeat against Botswana. He was unable to say what could have gone wrong saying he would wait for the report from the Mehalalitoe technical team before making any comments.

Under the watchful eye of Mr. Pule Khojane, there was hope that Mehalalitoe would emulate their male compatriots, Likuena which went on to reach the COSAFA Cup finals where they eventually lost by a slim margin against defending champions Zambia. This shows that LeFA has a long way to go to develop women’s football in the country.There is a national women’s football Super League which is dominated by the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF), whose players dominate Mehalalitoe.
