OMBUDSMAN PRESENTS REPORT ON INSPECTION OF INSTITUTIONS

The office of the Ombudsman has presented a report following inspections of facilities such as hospitals, correctional services as well as military cells that the office embarked on from February to September.

While presenting the findings of the inspections, the Ombudsman Advocate Tlotliso Polaki said that amongst the facilities that inspections were carried out on, there are a few which caught their attention such as the Mohlomi hospital, Berea Correctional Services, the Maseru Female prison as well as the Juvenile training centre which she said living conditions at such facilities compromises the basic human rights. She indicated that at the Mohlomi mental hospital, there is great congestion which also posesa health risk as the facility is faced with a challenge of lies infestation which is contagious amongst the patients.

She showed that though they had also spotted challenges in other correctional facilities, the Berea correctional facility has appeared to be the most challenged in terms of over congestion and lack of infrastructure which she mentioned to be posing a health and security risk also. She further added that in their inspections they also revealed the challenges that hospitals across the country are facing in terms of equipment, staff and other resources which is mentioned to be tempering with human rights as some people might lose their lives due to such conditions.

Meanwhile, Advocate Polaki said that some of the recommendations that the office is making on some of the findings include complete demolition of the prison structures such as that of Quthing, Qacha;s Nek, Berea, Maseru Female prison as well as the juvenile training centre.
