The district Disaster Management Authority  has launched verification for vulnerable residents around Kampong distribution point. A total of 400 beneficiaries will get rice and wheat.

 

Beneficiaries will be from urban areas namely Ha-Ramoroke, Hillside Mamosa, Lebaleng, Motsemocha, Police line, Lifofaneng, Leropong, Thifa, Hlapalimane, Mapheleng, Sehlekehlekeng, Ramoeletsi, Liqalabeng, Liqokoeng, TJ and Khomo-lia -oela. In an interview , District Disaster Manager, Mrs.'Mats'itso Motemekoane revealed that a total of 1470 people from 12 distribution points will benefit from the 17 metric tons of wheat and 37 metric tons of rice donations.

 

She said registration will continue until November 15 and beyond depending on the weather condition.She encouraged resident's to register deserving candidates - the most vulnerable.'

 

Mamosa Chief, Chief Kalinyane Seitlheko  expressed concern over a large  number from his area even though a few will be selected saying this symbolises hunger.One of the beneficiaries from  TJ, Mrs. 'Maphoka Khali said she is happy to be amongst the selected group. According to an Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) 2023, about 245,000 people in Lesotho (16 percent) faced  food insecurity between July and August.

 

This number is expected to rise to about 325,000 (about 22 percent of the population) between September and March 2024.

The report further revealed that five of Lesotho’s 10 districts are in IPC Phase 2 (stressed) and the other five districts are in IPC Phase 3 (crisis).

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network also warned that the food security situation in Lesotho will worsen later this year when the expected El Nino conditions peak.
