At least 268 Vulnerable Households will participate in the community works of digging dams and springs as an effort to save water for future use. The project will be carried out by beneficiaries from six Community Councils of Metsi-Maholo, Qibing, Mamants Makoabating, Tsanatalana and Urban Council whereby each Community Council will have 47 beneficiaries.

In an interview, Disaster Management Authority District Disaster Management Officer Mrs. Matlotliso Sekhesa said the community work will be carried out under Improving Adaptive Capacity of Vulnerable and Food Insecure Population in Lesotho

project called Anticipatory Action Plan whereby the beneficiaries will be paid M1,200 locking in, in the morning hours and after lunch they will start horticultural activities.  She highlighted that the work of digging dams and springs will be supervised by the government Ministries of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition in collaboration with Defence and National Security and Environment through the Department of Soil and Water Conservation.  

The District Disaster Management Officer indicated that the effort followed the

Meteorological Service anticipatory report from the Ministry of Natural Resource that the country will experience less rainfall hence the need for members of the community to use all ideas that will help them to secure water for daily consumption and irrigation.

She further clarified that the Anticipatory Action Plan is implemented with the aim of reinforcing communities; food security in response to the risk of  drought while at the same time reducing the impacts of a forecast hazard before it occurs.

Improving Adaptive Capacity of Vulnerable and Food Insecure Population in Lesotho project is to enhance the adaptive capacity and build resilience of vulnerable and food insecure households and communities to the impacts of climate change on food security.
