With the purpose of protecting children, the District Child and Protection Team (DCPT) is visiting community councils in different areas in Leribe.This week the team is visiting Menkhoaneng and Bolahla  Community councils.

The secretary of DCPT Leribe Mr. Morema Phits;ane explained that the team visited Menkhoaneng community council with the purpose of training and holding a dialogue with religious leaders on issues affecting children.

He explained that the team is among others disseminating information to religious leaders on child protection, children;s rights, international legal frameworks, National legal frameworks and different forms of abuse.

Mr. Phitsáne said  forms of child abuse such as , child marriage, child labour, corporal punishment and sexual exploitation are part of the topics looked into in protecting the child.

The secretary told the Agency that there are protective measures towards child-headed households, protecting children with disabilities and cultural, traditional and customary practices harmful to children, citing initiation schools.

He indicated that children also have to be protected within religious and traditional organisations and the response to the abuse is important in protecting every child. DCPT is made up of representatives from different government sectors and non governmental organizations in the district.
