Armed police in roadblocks threat to tourists

Member of Parliament for Makhaleng constituency, honourable Mootsi Lehata says heavily armed police in road blocks portray that there is no peace in the country and that could scare away tourists.

He said this in his point of order in the National Assembly on Wednesday, indicating that traffic police were seen with big rifles in one of the roadblocks in the country while on his way to the parliament on Wednesday morning.

Lehata further viewed that those arms are a symbol of lack of peace in the country, saying that ought to be discouraged, more so after Minister of Sports, Culture and Tourism, honorable Motlatsi Maqelepo had called for support of the members of parliament during the Maletsunyane Braai Festival.

He said Maqelepo had appealed for the warm hospitality to the tourists during the festive season in which he appealed to the Immigration officers at the border gates to also speed up services to the tourists in order for them not to stand in long queues.

Lehata said many tourists are expected to visit the country during the festive season, saying if they see the heavily armed police, will give the country a bad image that there is no peace in Lesotho.

In his response to the point of order, Speaker of the National Assembly honorable Tlohang Sekhamane agreed with the view of honorable Lehata, saying if there is no peace in the house, it ought to be an internal matter which could be dealt with within the house not to the outside world.
