LEVOSA CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO PRIORITISE EDUCATION
LEVOSA calls on government to prioritise education
27 November 2023 | 14:01

The Lesotho Voluntary Student Association (LEVOSA) has called on the Government to prioritise education of Lesotho’s youth and to honour its contractual obligations.

This came after the government refused to release funds to students who were in a contractual agreement with the government under the National Manpower Development Secretariat (NMDS) of the Ministry of Planning.

According to the LEVOSA Secretary Mr. Makholane Lebesa, they are currently embroiled in a legal battle with the government, exposing a concerning disregard for the education of the nation’s youth. He said the legal battle is perpetuated by the affected students, but not affiliated with LEVOSA, took the matter to the High Court of Lesotho, seeking justice

Moreover, Lebesa indicated that the High Court ruled in favour of the students, highlighting the government’s obligation to honour its commitments to educational support, and despite the High Court’s decision, the government has chosen to contest the ruling and has taken the matter to the Appeal Court.

Furthermore, Lebesa stated that the association condemns the government’s actions, emphasizing that the refusal to release funds not only jeopardizes the academic pursuits of deserving students but also undermines the broader goal of national development through education.

LEVOSA is an independent entity affiliated with the Democratic Congress, working within various higher learning institutions to recruit, reinforce, and empower youth for the development and enhancement of democratic values in Lesotho.
