The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC), in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Gender, and Sports, convened a consultative meeting with all tourism stakeholders to address challenges and outline a strategic roadmap for the future. In his keynote address, Minister Mr. Motlatsi Maqelepo emphasized the multitude of challenges hindering the flourishing of the tourism sector, prompting the need for introspection and forward planning. He underscored the sector;s pivotal role in the economy while lamenting the lack of proactive engagement from relevant stakeholders.

The Minister advocated for strategies aimed at attracting tourists by spotlighting Basotho culture, arts, and crafts, bolstering security measures, and enhancing border services. He acknowledged prevalent hurdles such as inadequate infrastructure, electricity, water, and a deficiency in professionalism within the sector, noting a seasonal spike in domestic tourism during festive periods as insufficient.

Emphasizing the necessity for sustained efforts, Mr. Maqelepo urged stakeholders to commit to continuous improvement in the tourism sector beyond seasonal fluctuations. Concluding his remarks, the Minister implored all stakeholders to engage constructively for the sector;s enhancement and the nations benefit. Mrs. Mabolaoana Selinyane, Director of Tourism, highlighted the department;s ongoing efforts since 2019 to develop a thriving tourism sector, emphasizing the importance of clear regulatory policies.

She also addressed the critical issue of tourist safety, citing it as a deterrent and underscoring the involvement of the security sector in the meeting. Expressing optimism, Mrs. Selinyane affirmed the commitment to diligent efforts post- meeting to elevate the sector;s standing. Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Leqapha Liphoto from the Department of Culture emphasized their focus on fostering peace, unity, and tolerance within the sector. He outlined plans for developmental legacy projects aimed at benefiting the public. Mr. Molupe Pheko, CEO of LTDC, commended stakeholders for their participation, affirming LTDC;s mandate to spearhead the development of a robust tourism industry contributing to sustainable economic growth, job creation, poverty alleviation, and environmental preservation.
