Seutloali Electoral Division Community Councillor Mrs. Mathabo Qela says as the heatwave continues to threaten lives, in different parts of Berea district nine villages under Seutloali Electoral Division (ED) are facing a severe water shortage.

Qhela said although they have a limited access to drinking water, however for the past three days they have been experiencing heatwave and the situation has exacerbated their ongoing water scarcity in their villages. She highlighted that among the problems which have worsened their water challenge includes vandalism of solar panels and cables which helps to pump the ground water and as well as the aging pipeline network.

Moreover, Qhela further said the situation has impacted negatively on essential services which includes Mahlatsa Health Centre and surrounding schools.  She said for them to have drinking water, they have to resort to uncovered water sources where they share with animals.

She said they are also in dire need of services such as access roads and electricity and with the 2024/2025 annual budget presentation around the corner, they strongly urge the government to consider them more especially with access roads and to improve water accessibility.

Furthermore, one of the villagers from Ha-Matelile, Mrs. Mahlompho Seotsanyana said due to the ongoing water challenge, women are the most affected as they risk their lives and walk long distances down the village in order to access drinking water from the unprotected wells.
