The Prime Minister, honourable Sam Ntsokoane Matekane on Thursday launched the three-day Moshoeshoe Walk from Menkhoaneng in Leribe to Thaba Bosiu in the Maseru district.

Addressing the crowd, honourable Matekane expressed his gratitude to the foreign visitors participating in the walk and everyone keen to make it a success. He said Moshoeshoe Walk is a unifier, attracting people from far places. Moreover, Matekane indicated that the walk is growing bigger and bigger every year.

Speaking at the same event, Chief Selebalo Selebalo indicated that they are aware of the positive impact by T- Connection and other stakeholders with regard to the walk, as it reminds Basotho nation of their roots and where they are heading to since launched by the late King Moshoeshoe II in 1986.

On the other hand, United Nations Representative Ms. Amanda Mukwashi said the walk is the personal experience to write for great grandchildren. She said the walk marks 200 years which is a fantastic achievement for this nation that has a legacy of peace and unity. She said, this country was founded on the principles of peace, prosperity and unity which matter most to the United Nations.

The founder of T- Connection Mr. Thabo Maretlane said the purpose of the walk this year is to celebrate 200 years of Basotho existence. He indicated that they are proud that the late King Moshoeshoe I was keen for this nation. Maretlane reminded that in 1824 the king left Butha Buthe via Menkhoaneng to pick his parents and went to Thaba Bosiu, walking nine days to complete the journey.

Furthermore, he said it is sad that even to date there is no free movement between South Africa and Lesotho, whereby their passports are destroyed every year. He pointed out that the government of South Africa should remember that Basotho nation supported them during difficult times whereby they were even killed, citing 1982.

Present at the event were also the United Kingdom Ambassador, Chinese Ambassador, European Union delegation, Her excellency of the Republic of Austria, people from Republic of Singapore, New Zealand and representatives from United Nations Children’s Fund and United Nations Population Fund.
