Maseru City Council MCC has appointed Ms. Mpho Moloi as the new Mayor of Maseru with effect from Monday, during an inauguration ceremony of newly elected Councilors.
Sixteen Councilors were sworn-in following the September 30 local government elections, and out of them, 12 are from MCC Wards while four are women who obtained special seats within the Council.
Today’s inauguration was supposed to have also included representation of three chiefs nominated into the MCC but their swearing-in did not happen due to a court order that prevented MCC from their inauguration.
The MCC Public Relations Officer Mrs. ‘Makatleho Mosala said according to the court order, it is alleged that there are concerns raised by the chiefs themselves, and it was not meant to prevent the inauguration of the Community Councilors, saying when the chiefs have settled their disputes, those who will be nominated will then be inaugurated.
Speaking after her appointment, Ms. Moloi thanked the Councilors for electing her into the office and appealed for their support while she will also be seeking God’s guidance to serve Basotho as expected.
Ms. Moloi, who is deputised by Mr. Tholang Sefojane, will be in office for one year and her duties include chairing Council meetings and serving as the face of MCC in national ceremonies.
