The Home of Aggressive Entrepreneurs (HAE) Lesotho handed a petition to the Government of Lesotho, requesting it to deliberately impose a complete import embargo on potatoes, spinach and cabbage starting from the 1st January 2019.
HAE Lesotho indicates that according to statistics, Lesotho imports more than 130 different vegetable commodities, totaling around M20m per month, though the country is capable of producing enough vegetables for domestic consumption.
In a report HAE Lesotho requested the government to ban importation of the three vegetable commodities, as they are easy to grow and their consumption is high in the country.
A member of HAE Lesotho movement in Finance Department Ms ‘Mamot’sili Ntlatlapa, pointed out that if their petition is accepted and the importation of the three vegetable commodities is banned on the 1st January next year, the economy of the country will improve.
She said HAE Lesotho is planning to engage in a nationwide campaign from now until next year, with the motive of informing farmers about the banning of importation of potatoes, spinach and cabbage in the country, and mobilizing vigorous production of these commodities.
She also said HAE Lesotho will sensitize and educate Basotho, about the long term positive impact of the ban and gather their support.
